I wrote an email to the Presto people about where I could get my mothers Presto fixed and they send me to a users forum? Do they not have anyone working there and only the customers can fix it? Kinda strange don't you think? It also directs me back to Presto.com to the tech support part of the site.....why didn't he send the message to them? Sorry about this thread, but it would be great to get a stright answer from a website for once........

Can the emails sent to her be forwarded to another email address or fax number until we get this resolved? Thanks!

Presto printing mailbox - prognosis for lightning surge survival?

The area where my mother lives hasn't had a recorded lightning strike for at least 50 years -- so hey, why invest in surge protectors? Well, the dry-lightning storm that hit central California last weekend, touching off more than 800 fires, was an equal-opportunity zapper. Two forks of one bolt blasted a couple of trees in my mother's back yard. Among the appliance casualties was Mom's Presto printer, which was DOA when I arrived to inspect the house. I'm wondering if the whole unit is toast, or whether the damage would have been absorbed by, and limited to, the printer's external power supply/converter box. If so, it would be a lot cheaper to get a new power supply than to buy a new printing mailbox system. Does anyone have any insight on how an HP Printing Mailbox handles that kind of major electrostatic-discharge abuse? Thanks in advance, Jim

Everything I've read has been great about the Presto service. However, our experience is not so wonderful. We bought my mother a Presto email machine for Christmas and set it up 2 days in advance. I spent 3 days on & off of the phone with the Presto Team. Though the machine would sometimes dial out when forced, it would not call out automatically. It was decided that the machine was defective so it was returned. Now we have a new one. I was able to talk Mom through the setup. It wouldn't work. To make a long story shorter, we got it to call out once last night after a reset and it called out once automatically. Now it has missed the next two call times. I am living in another state and don't really want to have to drive there to resolve this issue. Has anyone else had problems that were eventually resolved. What did it take? It's very frustrating to just keep pulling the plug. Then waiting, then forcing a dial, then waiting some more. And to follow up on our Presto problem.... Peter Radsliff contacted me right away and got everyone in the Presto Team involved...

Is there an easy way to suspend delivery of the subscriptions? After returning from a week away, my mother was confronted with over 50 pages of "mail", that had accumulated in her absence. All of this was from the daily subscriptions... It would be a good feature to be able to designate an "away" period during which to suspend all subscriptions (without having to unsubscribe and re-subscribe). This would save on ink and paper, not to mention the clutter of having old news, etc to sift through.

Has anyone had a problem with paper jams? I set up the machine for my mother-in-law a few weeks back and everything seemed fine. Then she called to say the paper jammed and she removed it, but now it was jamming all the time. I brought the machine back to my house and it is jamming still. I got it to print the demo sheet without jamming but then all the other times it has jammed. It starts to print and then stops and then crumples. I looked inside and I cannot see any paper pieces, but when the ink carraige goes back and forth there is a bit of a ginding or vibration. If I cannot get it to work, how can I get it replaced/serviced. Thanks in advance for any input.

Help! It's after business hours, or I'd call the help number. I can't even get started with this machine. I'm trying to set it up for my in-laws. We've plugged everything in properly. I know the phone line works because the phone plugged into the line out on the back of the hardware functions. But, when we first plugged it in, it went through it's paces, and printed out a sheet that only said it wasn't connected to a phone line. Well, yes it is! I know I'm supposed to get a printout with a "security code." No amount of unplugging and re-plugging the machine results in anything. I have a steady blue light. Is there no way to get it to try again to dial in and print out my security code? I've tried doing a force connect to presto (simultaneously pushing the stop button and the up volume button twice), but that results in only getting a recording. I hear no modem-type sounds. Should I? I read about this force connect on another web site. Very frustrating. I'm supposed to drive back home to Austin tomorrow, but will feel terrible if I have to leave my in-laws with...

Does anyone have any information on how the printer data stream is setup? Evidently the printer has ben pre-programmed to dial, but how might one change that to a specific number. The other known is that the printer spits out a security code and that tells the service who it is. I am curious as to how difficult it would be to set up a server for the printer.

I set up the Presto printing mailbox for my 83 year old mother this week. We have a large family scattered all over the country (9 brothers and sisters plus 13 nieces and nephews). Naturally it's great for my mother to be receiving letters and pictures from everyone. Honestly, though, this is just really convenient for the rest of the family. Let's face it. Darn few people write letters anymore (unfortunately), but most of us think nothing of popping off a quick email. This way the family can send mom a note on the fly. I think this will make it a lot easier for us all to keep in touch with her. So far a number of siblings have sent notes, which is wonderful for my mom. Buying Process: I ended up lucking out on a great deal with this. I wish I had realized at the time just how great it was. I would have bought a few more (and ebayed any I didn't end up using!). I got mine for $30 at buy.com on the day after Thanksgiving. Haven't seen a deal like that since then. Account Setup: The online setup was pretty easy. The only challenge...

Replacement Ink Cartridges

I saw one posting that indicated the "Ink Status" report did not work with 3rd party ink cartridges; has anyone found less costly cartridges that will properly register the status? Most of us realize that HP makes money on their ink and other expendables, and at one cartridge per month, that is aboyt $420 per year on ink, more if we step-up the usage with more content. (This may be one reason NOT to use "Presto Styles", because it accelerates the depletion of ink)... Cutting the ink costs by 1/2 or even 1/3 would be welcome, but the ink status reporting is a major requirement for us; so we are on a quest for cheaper ink cartridges that also properly report their status.
