Can the emails sent to her be forwarded to another email address or fax number until we get this resolved? Thanks!

Presto printing mailbox - prognosis for lightning surge survival?

The area where my mother lives hasn't had a recorded lightning strike for at least 50 years -- so hey, why invest in surge protectors? Well, the dry-lightning storm that hit central California last weekend, touching off more than 800 fires, was an equal-opportunity zapper. Two forks of one bolt blasted a couple of trees in my mother's back yard. Among the appliance casualties was Mom's Presto printer, which was DOA when I arrived to inspect the house. I'm wondering if the whole unit is toast, or whether the damage would have been absorbed by, and limited to, the printer's external power supply/converter box. If so, it would be a lot cheaper to get a new power supply than to buy a new printing mailbox system. Does anyone have any insight on how an HP Printing Mailbox handles that kind of major electrostatic-discharge abuse? Thanks in advance, Jim

Is there an easy way to suspend delivery of the subscriptions? After returning from a week away, my mother was confronted with over 50 pages of "mail", that had accumulated in her absence. All of this was from the daily subscriptions... It would be a good feature to be able to designate an "away" period during which to suspend all subscriptions (without having to unsubscribe and re-subscribe). This would save on ink and paper, not to mention the clutter of having old news, etc to sift through.

Has anyone had a problem with paper jams? I set up the machine for my mother-in-law a few weeks back and everything seemed fine. Then she called to say the paper jammed and she removed it, but now it was jamming all the time. I brought the machine back to my house and it is jamming still. I got it to print the demo sheet without jamming but then all the other times it has jammed. It starts to print and then stops and then crumples. I looked inside and I cannot see any paper pieces, but when the ink carraige goes back and forth there is a bit of a ginding or vibration. If I cannot get it to work, how can I get it replaced/serviced. Thanks in advance for any input.

Help! It's after business hours, or I'd call the help number. I can't even get started with this machine. I'm trying to set it up for my in-laws. We've plugged everything in properly. I know the phone line works because the phone plugged into the line out on the back of the hardware functions. But, when we first plugged it in, it went through it's paces, and printed out a sheet that only said it wasn't connected to a phone line. Well, yes it is! I know I'm supposed to get a printout with a "security code." No amount of unplugging and re-plugging the machine results in anything. I have a steady blue light. Is there no way to get it to try again to dial in and print out my security code? I've tried doing a force connect to presto (simultaneously pushing the stop button and the up volume button twice), but that results in only getting a recording. I hear no modem-type sounds. Should I? I read about this force connect on another web site. Very frustrating. I'm supposed to drive back home to Austin tomorrow, but will feel terrible if I have to leave my in-laws with...

Does anyone have any information on how the printer data stream is setup? Evidently the printer has ben pre-programmed to dial, but how might one change that to a specific number. The other known is that the printer spits out a security code and that tells the service who it is. I am curious as to how difficult it would be to set up a server for the printer.

I saw one posting that indicated the "Ink Status" report did not work with 3rd party ink cartridges; has anyone found less costly cartridges that will properly register the status? Most of us realize that HP makes money on their ink and other expendables, and at one cartridge per month, that is aboyt $420 per year on ink, more if we step-up the usage with more content. (This may be one reason NOT to use "Presto Styles", because it accelerates the depletion of ink)... Cutting the ink costs by 1/2 or even 1/3 would be welcome, but the ink status reporting is a major requirement for us; so we are on a quest for cheaper ink cartridges that also properly report their status.

Hi Presto Members! Unfortunately I have been defeated after nearly a year of trying to get my mother to make good use of her Presto email printer. Despite my enthusiasm, I am three thousand miles away and cannot put paper in her printer or insert a new ink cartridge; nor can I jolly her along when Uncle Hughie sends her a 12-page email consisting of 11 pages of forwarding garbage and one page of jokes, which she throws away because she can't be bothered finding the joke. So with regret and totally bummed, I am forced to discontinue this great service that my Mom is just not using and never will use. Rats. So I have a Presto printer for someone. Any offers? (My Mom is in South Jersey if you happen to be near there to pick it up you'd save shipping; otherwise I'll have my brother ship it to you.) Let me know. IN addition to posting here at PrestoPlace, email me at mac@mcwong.com so I'll know to check. Thanks, yours depressedly, Mac McCarthy

After a year of having the wonderful Presto email-printer service at my Mother's apartment, I am finally forced to admit defeat. Rats. One thing you eventually learn is that you can not jolly some people along to accept or make use of some things. My mother likes the idea of getting emails on the printer, but as each slight little thing goes wrong, she simply refuses to learn how to deal with it. The real problem is that I am 3000 miles away, so I can't drop by to put paper in, change the ink, plug it back into the wall, or explain to her what some bit of arcana on the printout means or doesn't mean. So the printer has been sitting on her floor unplugged for the past two months. Worse, I can't get my several brothers and sister who live in the area and visit her regularly to pay attention to the machine either. The problems couldn't be more trivial. Putting in paper. Checking the printouts. And when my Uncle Hugh sends his sister one of his forwarded email jokes, it produces page after page of forwarded addresses before it gets to the joke. Big deal; but...

I purchased this for my 94 year mother and she really enjoys receiving the letters and calls it her computer. I find this service fills a needed market and hope it’s very successful. OK now what I would like to see: A better printer from day one I knew this was a low end model. Presto needs an upgraded one for the people who want better pictures and a minimum of 2 ink tanks with the black tank being large as black text is used frequently. I send pictures and the quality is just not that good in today’s standards. I would like to use better paper maybe a light weight grossly photo type as it would work for text and be great for pictures and a better printer could handle it. The cost to make the changes would be low about 30.00 and I would pay 50.00 or more to have it. PS I would like to see an add on to from Presto to use with any printer that would let the customer to buy his own printer. I would still pay the same price or more.

The "Status" info that is presented on the Account home page is much too limited. It merely shows the time of the last connection, and what the paper and ink statuses were at that time (it is not even clear if the paper status would show "emplty" or "jammed", if that were the case). It would be really helpful to see how many messages were sent , as this would provide some indication of a SUCCESSFUL session. It would be even better if we could see the message headers, so now we know WHAT has been delivered. This concept has some similarities with the View The Queue thread, and I believe both ideas have merit, and should be implemented. I especially agree with the comment that the Account Manager role includes an implied "power of attorney" over the data in the queue, much in the same way that a Corporate eMail SysAdmin can view headers of all items in the mailboxes.

I have an elderly single parent with an onset of mild dementia. My hope for the Presto Service is to be able to send her daily messages that will keep her mind active, and I believe that this service can help. She has already solved a number of the daily word jumble puzzles, and I would like to see other "mental exercise games" targeted at various levels that we could try... This is on top of the benefit that I can send her DAILY personal notes with family photos which helps to keep her recognition faculties alert... I must say, though, I am deeply disappointed that the HP Mailbox only holds 50 pages of paper while the ink cartridge says it is capable of printing 300-plus pages. How much more would it have cost to have designed the device with a 1-ream paper capacity?... My fear is that my mother will not be able to load new paper every week or every other week, and that may be the show-stopper here. If anyone develops an "engineering hack" that will expand the paper capacity, please post details! (Extra points if it doesn't void the warranty... )
