I am considering purchasing one of the Presto units for my mother. What is the printing speed of the unit? Does it take several minutes to print a photograph since a dial up phone line is being used?

The Presto Printing Mailbox does not indicate when it is dialing out, so your Mom won't even know when it is using the phone line. As for the amount of time it takes to download photos, we optimize the size of the photo when we tranform it into PrestoMail, so whether you sent it as a 10k or 10M file, it will take the same time. I find on tests I have done with my Printing Mailbox that the dial-in time is typically only one or two minutes. Of course that depends on how much mail is waiting to be sent.

As for the printing speed of the printer itself, it is pretty fast. The printer is rated at 10 pages per minute. So if you are wondering if this will be like a high resolution photo printer that might take 3 minutes to print out one page, then no, Presto is not like that. It's more like a couple of minutes of dial-in time followed by ten seconds of printing (again, depending on how much mail is being printed).

What happens when my mother tries to use the phone when it is dialing in to receive messages? Will it interrupt the dial up process?

The system is designed to immediately drop the phone line when your mother picks it up during dialing. She might have to hang up, wait a second, and pick up again -- but that is the way it is designed.
