Does anyone have any information on how the printer data stream is setup? Evidently the printer has ben pre-programmed to dial, but how might one change that to a specific number. The other known is that the printer spits out a security code and that tells the service who it is. I am curious as to how difficult it would be to set up a server for the printer.

We control all aspects of the service that connects to the printer (it was purpose-built to connect to the Presto service and nothing else). So, items relating to that are proprietary and we're not telling!   ; )

As much as I would love to support a Presto hacker community, we're not quite ready for that right now. We have had a number of people write us and say that a Presto is a great companion to an iPhone (especially when the iPhone user does not have a PC).

Peter, Peter, Peter,

I knew YOU wouldn't cough up the secrets! Sooner or later though, something will slip out so check those briefcases at quitting time.

LOL!!! Hey, I would like nothing better than for a few enterprising engineering types to figure out some "new" uses for Presto. Here is an example for the Roomba robotic vacuum that's pretty interesting: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7635911247290390645&q=roomba+hac...

King Camp Gillette (inventor of the safety razor) understood that the key to business success and fortune was a product that had to be purchased over and over again. This concept has interesting connotations here. It is well-known that HP really does not make it's major money on printers, but on the cartridges that they require. And HP goes to some length to insure that you only purchase their cartridge. They are not alone, it is the business model of ink-jet printer manufacturers. The other Gillette model that appears here is the recurring service that is needed. The printer can only call Presto and Presto controls what and when the printer prints--genius!

For $9.99/month I could send 20 some letters via snail mail, what a pain. We all want instant, instant, instant--thus the tradename: Presto!
