When my parents are talking on the phone, there is the sound of a number being speed dialed when something is coming in on their Presto.  This is very annoying and I guess there's nothing the people at Presto can do about it.

Also, the printer for my computer has 2 cartridges - one color and one black.  Presto should have the same thing since a lot of what my parents receive is in print, not pictures.  They have to change their cartridge all of the time when the black ink runs out.  Seriously, I think this is a scam on H-P's part to make money off of the hundreds of printer cartridges I'm sure my parents will have to buy over the years.  How hard would it have been to have put both a color and a black ink cartridge in Presto?

I'm not all that impressed with Presto, and I don't think my parents are either, but since it was a Christmas gift, I think they're afraid to say anything..

If the HP Mailbox was programmed to confirm a dial tone is present BEFORE dialing, then an existing call would not be interrupted with the speed dial tones; it would simply hang up and try again.  HP should realize this and send out a patch so the device will operate this way (does anyone know if the HP Mail box can receive updated firmware this way, or have we purchased a device that is locked-in to it's original configuration?)  Does anyone from HP monitor this forum, or does anyone from Presto send suggestions like tis on to HP?

Ditto the comment on two versus one ink cartridge, and the "Styles" will undoubtedly expend color ink that was not intended when the message was drafted.

Thanks for the input - just talked to someone at Presto who said they're aware of the problem and that if they are able to fix it that everyone will receive software to update their presto printers which to me is an unacceptable answer for such a costly product - they should've worked out all the kinks before putting Presto on the market.  I've been on the phone with my mom when the speed dialing occurs, and it's VERY annoying.  And it doesn't happen just once - Presto keeps trying to connect over and over until we just hang up to continue our conversation at another time.  I, too, wonder if Presto monitors this site or if there's some way to make complaints other than over the phone to some no name technician who doesn't really give a rat's behind...

I only have the two Prestos I manage dial out at 11 PM and 6 AM. Because of that, the dialing interuption has never been an issue because the odds are no one is on the phone at those times.

HOWEVER, I would prefer to have it dial out at like 2 AM. Is there a specific reason the settings only allow for it to dial out between 6 AM and 11 PM?

Just an FYI, as Gillette makes money off of blades, not razors, HP makes money off of ink, not printers. That is why you can buy a pretty good HP printer for $30 on sale at Staples.

With that said, I'm sure "simplicity" was taken in to consideration when deciding to go with a single cartridge system. Also, you don't have to use the HP brand cartridges, others work too and at half the cost. I just buy them online and have them drop-shipped to the people I manage the Prestos for. They only have to provide the paper. The "ink indicator" system through the Presto website admin doesn't work with non-HP ink cartridges.

Wow! What a great and thorough amount of interaction here. OK, so first of all, Presto personnel do indeed monitor this site. You can see that we answer questions same day in most cases. HP personnel do not monitor the site that we know of, but that does not matter as the HP Printing Mailbox was developed by HP for Presto, so we are the right people to talk to anyway.

Here is my attempt to catch all of the questions above:

Dialing Behavior - Presto is designed to have a light touch on phone line usage (i.e. checking if in use, hanging up if interrupted, etc.). Unfortunately, phone line quality varies greatly around the country and we have found that some people report problems, and other people don't at all. We have been working hard lately on improving the way the HP Printing Mailbox handles phone lines. And, it was indeed designed to be updated in the field. If the interaction with your phone line and Presto is less than ideal, we suggest you set it to dial in at 6:00 A.M. and/or 11:00 P.M. effectively using the phone line when it is not as likely to be in use. Another thing, a question above asks why we don't allow middle of the night connections. This is to provide a clear time window for service updates where we don't have thousands of HP Printing Mailboxes dialing in when the system is down for maintenance.

One vs. Two Ink Cartridges - The HP Printing Mailbox was designed first for simplicity. Usability testing showed us that one ink cartridge was much easier for people with limited dexterity or familiarity with technology to manage. That's why it was chosen. There are some downsides to that decision. But the vast majority of Presto users love the ease with which their parents are able to maintain the product and also love the quality of the output.

I hope this helps to answer some of the above questions.
