As we all get older, it gets easier and easier to forget to communicate with our dear old parents. Unfortunately, as they get older they want to feel unforgotten and connected with the family. Of course, it can sometimes be difficult coming up with a reaon why we should send them a message or what to say.... so....

Let's hear some suggestions on what would be a good thing to say or why you need to send Mom and Dad a message today. Like:

...To tell Dad you bought a new tackle box.

...To tell Mom you made those childhood favorite cookies for your kids

...To tell Mom that fabric softner really IS a good thing.

...To remind Dad the baseball game is on tonight (Go Cubs!)

...because today is Mom's birtday

...because you just want to say you miss living at home (yeah... right)

Whatever the reason, share it below.

Here's an automatic thing I've setup that automatically sends my mom a Presto e-mail each day that is personal and not "generic".  It's an automatic daily "agenda" that I can have automatically generated from a Google Calendar I've setup.

Background:  My mom is one of 11 kids and thus part of a very large family.  I maintain a family website that includes a directory of all 250+ family members, which includes birthdays and anniversaries in the directory.  So, I've then setup a Google calendar (http://calendar.google.com) into which I've entered everyone's birthday and anniversary.  With that large of a family, there are not very many days that have nothing on the agenda.  You may not have that large of a family, but you can use the Google Calendar for anything, so you could setup one with family reminders, doctors appointments, special events -- anything.

So now the Presto part.  Once you've got the calendar up and running.  You setup a google account for your presto recipient, however to get started, DON'T USE THE PRESTO E-MAIL address.  This is because the google account and calendar process will require that you respond to confirmation e-mails to confirm a couple things, and if you use the presto account, it won't work.

Now go to the Google calendar and "subscribe" to it, asking for a daily "agenda".  I suggest not asking for event reminders, because that will generate a new e-mail for each event.  With the agenda option, the end result will be ONE e-mail each day with the day's events listed.  On days where there are no events, your Presto recipient will get a page saying "There are no agenda items for today."

I suggest keeping the google account setup with the temporary e-mail address that you can check in on, and then after a day or two of seeing the agenda properly flow into that account, you can just go to the google account and CHANGE the e-mail address from the one you have access to, to the Presto account.  From that day forward, your Presto recipient will get a daily agenda e-mail.  You can constantly modify and add to the Google calendar without bothering with the Presto account again.

I've been using this with my Mom for a few weeks now and it has worked flawlessly!  And of course the best part with the Google calendar is the price -- FREE!

I hope you will find a great way to put this to use for you and your Presto recipient.

This is fantastic khorton! I also use Google Calendar Beta as a family calendar but have not yet extended it to my Mother-in-Law who uses Presto. Thanks for the idea.

I forgot one more critical item to make my above Google Calendar suggestion work.  You need to make sure to add the Google calendar to your recipient's Presto Friends List.  The address to use is:  calendar-notification@google.com

Obviously this is necessary for the daily agenda reminders to get through the Presto "whitelist."
