"Dancing Grandmas" raise awareness for long term healthcare needs.

In 2011, what does an organization do to raise awareness for an important societal issue? They organize a flash mob! Today a group of Dancing Grandmas invaded Times Square in New York to bring awareness to planning for long term health needs. On behalf of a non-profit named 3in4 Need More, the group hopes their efforts with jumpstart a campaign to raise awareness for the majority of people who are ill-prepared for the crushing costs of long term health care.
I noticed that the non-profit is supported by a number of long term insurance carriers and brokers (no surprise there), but this doesn’t lessen the real need for people to take charge of their future by planning ahead instead of taking a “come what may” attitude. The way I see it, it’s like a number of floss and toothpaste companies raising awareness for proper dental hygiene—it doesn’t matter that they may get some business from it, it’s still the right thing to promote people to do, and I applaud them for applying some creativity, time and money to drive awareness.
Leading the charge for this issue with 3in4 Need More is noted geriatric care manager and nationally-recognized spokesperson for seniors, Dr. Marion Somers. Presto collaborated with Dr. Marion to create two iPhone/iPod Touch apps named Elder 411 and Elder 911. Both are aimed at helping family caregivers with the struggles of elder care, and both are now free in the iTunes store. Dr. Marion is a tremendous advocate for seniors and a wonderful person, as well.
Dr. Marion and 3in4 Need More are launching a nationwide “Get Your Life Back” contest to find and help struggling caregivers. Some lucky family caregiver will receive what sounds like an ultimate caregiver makeover that includes “a week’s worth of pampering and relaxation, an in-home safety assessment and overhaul, one-on-one coaching, and high-tech solutions to support a range of caregiving needs.” Dr. Marion says the ultimate caregiver makeover is valued at $50,000 and I'm going to be sure to offer the winner a Presto Mail system if they want it. If you know someone who is an unsung hero as a family caregiver, help them get their life back by entering them in the contest here.
As chairman of the Aging Technology Alliance, I see many elder issues that people don’t take serious enough until they are in the midst of a crisis. I am inspired! Don’t be surprised if you see a bunch of ‘dancing grandpas’ at next year’s consumer electronics show!
